Just as important as the actual tattoo application, is looking after it.

You will have had one of the following methods recommended to you.

Saniderm/Dermalize

I have this available to buy for £5, I'll give you two pieces and a sheet of instructions.

Keep the first piece on for 12-24 hours. You'll notice liquid building up under the patch, this is normal. Remove very gently, wash with soap and water, rinse well and pat dry with kitchen paper.

Apply second sheet of Saniderm/Dermalize once area is totally dry.

To apply-peel off the paper side first! Allow at least 2cm over lap around the tattoo, press down and then peel off the plastic.

After 24-48 hours change this piece as before.

Leave the third piece on for 4-5 days.

Don't use any creams or lotions whilst using Saniderm/Dermalize as it'll affect the adheshive. Shower as normal but avoid submerging in the bath or swimming. You also need to avoid submerging it this way for a total of two weeks until it's fully healed.

After you have finished wearing the Saniderm/Dermalize use Lush's Sympathy for the Skin to keep it moist 4-6 times a day.

Cling film method

Keep the cling film that we wrapped your tattoo in on for approx 4-6 hours. Rinse well with mild soap and warm water. Pat dry with kitchen paper (do not rub). Apply a very thin layer of a lotion that has cocoa butter in it or Sympathy for the Skin from Lush. Re-cover with fresh cling film. Repeat these steps every 4-6 hours on the day you are tattooed and the day after. Keep the final wrap of the day on overnight and then remove it and wash in the morning (as described above).

From the third day you no longer need to cover with film, you can just use lotion 3 or 4 times a day. Simply smear a small amount onto the tattoo.

Both methods

AVOID GETTING IT WET! Don't swim or lie in the bath with your new tattoo submerged and don't spend too long under the shower until it's totally healed. This will take around 7-10 days.

Don't sunbathe or use a sunbed whilst healing and then when it is healed and you are in the sun, always use high factor sunscreen on your tattoo to prevent it from fading. The best I’ve found is P50 by Riemann.
